Deb Bahadur Gurung announces candidacy for Liverpool South Ward by-election

Sydney,  Community leader Deb Bahadur Gurung has announced his candidacy in the upcoming by-election for the South Ward of Liverpool City Council, Australia. The by-election is scheduled to take place on April 18, 2026, where Gurung will be contesting under the banner of “Community Voice of Australia.”

The by-election was triggered following the resignation of Deputy Mayor Betty Green due to health reasons. A total of around 11 candidates, including those from the Labor Party, Liberal Party, and independents, are competing in the election.

Gurung has been actively involved in community service within the Nepali diaspora in Australia for many years. He has over 30 years of experience serving in the British Army and the Australian Defence Force. Having lived in the Liverpool area for a long time, he is well aware of the needs and concerns of local residents, families, businesses, and future generations.

If elected, Gurung has committed to ensuring fair and transparent council rates, improving waste management services, upgrading roads, footpaths, parks, and sports infrastructure, and protecting community assets from unnecessary privatization. He has also emphasized increasing accessibility to community and sporting facilities, promoting new infrastructure development, creating local job opportunities, and making Liverpool a safer and more livable city.

Speaking to London Nepal News Australia, Gurung said he has received very positive feedback from the local community during his campaign and is confident about achieving a favorable result. He stated that his long-standing involvement in both Nepali and broader Australian community work has helped him understand local issues, and he is committed to addressing them effectively.He also mentioned that he has been receiving support and encouragement from people across different sectors, and many individuals have shown strong goodwill towards his candidacy during the campaign.

With a focus on transparency, accountability, and community-driven leadership, Gurung has urged voters in South Ward to support him in the upcoming election. The area is also home to a significant Nepali population. Nepali-origin representatives have previously been elected at the council level in Australia, serving as an inspiration for the wider community.
