An appeal to fund relief efforts after the devastating earthquake that shook Nepal last week has raised £19 million from the UK in just one day.
The DEC Nepal Earthquake Appeal will use the money to help provide relief to the estimated eight million people affected by Saturday’s quake.
DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed said: “People in the UK have, once again, shown their generosity by responding to help those whose lives have been devastated by disaster.”
The government matched the first £5 million of donations, in an appeal fronted by Joanna Lumley and supported by the Queen and the Prince of Wales.
Donations for Nepal have exceeded the amounts raised in the first day of campaigning for the Philippines Typhoon, the East Africa Crisis, the Haiti Earthquake and the Pakistan Floods.
